{thanks Adrian for taking such a glamorous picture of me in an effort to “document the baby journey”} |
While I’ll only be 9 weeks pregnant this Thursday, the past 3 weeks have seemed to drag on forever as I’ve been pushing myself to get past the constant nausea and fatigue that is “morning sickness.” Imagine being seasick all day every day and you’ll pretty much know how I’ve been feeling. Not so great. I think I’ve scoured the ends of the internet for morning sickness relief, but ultimately it’s been the suggestion of blog and twitter friends that have helped me the most. Here’s a bit of what I’ve tried — some of it has worked, some of it hasn’t, and some I still haven’t tried yet.
- Saltine Crackers. I had a pack of these sitting on my nightstand and they actually did work really well for the first couple of weeks. I think the combination of the salt and starch quieted my upset stomach. This week though, they’ve somehow stopped working on me.
- Ginger Tea. I had a pack of this ginger tea leftover from when I was really into tea almost a year ago. The ginger actually does help a bit first thing in the morning. The smell is quite strong but it does help when my stomach is rumbling. Ginger candies also work quite well, but the taste was a bit too strong for me to handle so I didn’t continue with those {but thank you Kim_TX for the rec!}. Unfortunately on the days when my stomach is ok but my head feels like it’s spinning, the ginger tea isn’t much use.
- Sea Bands. I just picked up these wristbands at Walgreens today {at the recommendation of Katie} and have to say so far these are doing a great job at helping my nausea. Normally I get hit with a huge wave of nausea after every meal but today was the first time that I actually felt ok. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that these babies keep working for me!
- Preggie Pops. I’ve read about these lozenge-type drops on a few of the pregnancy forums and Robin actually mentioned it too in one of my post comments. The reviews have been a bit mixed from what I’ve seen, and since they aren’t easily accessible at a local store, I haven’t made the extra effort to order them online. Has anybody had good experiences with these?
Ultimately, I’ve found that sleep is the best remedy. But for those 9 hours where I need to actually function at work, I am open to trying it all! If any of you have any other advice, I’d love to hear. 🙂
And I promise to be back tomorrow with an outfit post!
P.S. In case you missed it:
- Color Brigade: Vol 48 {Flower-y} – A simple, layered look finished off with a fun flower-y accessory!

It's Twitter Katie! So glad the Sea Bands are helping! Not to be stalking your life or anything, but I also tried the Preggy Pops, and I *think* the main ingredient is ginger, so it's probably not much different than the ginger candies you are already trying. Are there Motherhood Maternity stores in your area? That's where I bought them when I was nauseated and desperate for a cure 🙂

Just read it – HOW did I miss this?!?! I love all things pregnancy (not pregnant, no kids, I just love reading and hearing other women's experiences) so I can't wait to read all about yours – the good and the not-so-good! And you will be the most adorable pregnant lady ever!
Kileen says
Oh good to know! There's a Motherhood Maternity about 30 min away but I'll stop by this weekend. Curious to see what else they have too. Thanks do much Katie!!
SkippySays says
Aw, Kileen, don't worry. All you need to do right now is take care of yourself! I hope you'll feel better really soon!

OMG congratulations on your pregnancy! I didn't know! I have not been into the petite blogging thing or blogs overall but I love your blog, Wendy's and Jeans so much I visit those! Wow, congrats!

Thank you so much April!

OMG, I also missed your announcement post! Congrats on your first pregnancy! I heard the first 3 months is usually the worse, but you're almost done with the 1st trimester, so hang on! You pretty much tried all the tips I know, ginger, crackers, and seaband! I heard that eating smaller frequent meals instead of big meals help too. Looking forward to your pregger fashion posts 🙂
Irisinspired says
Ugh, poor girl! I had BAD morning sickness until I was 25 weeks and it started right at about 6.5 weeks! I don't know how working mama's like you do it! I know that there is a prescription that you can get once you're 10 weeks, so if you're interested or incredibly miserable be sure to ask about it. Otherwise, just lots of rest and listening to what your body is telling you it needs. If you're hungry for it, eat it!
Hang in there, it's so totally worth it! 🙂

Ugh! Morning sickness is the WORST! I tried all the natural remedies to no avail. The only thing that worked for me was Unisom tablets. It is safe, you can google it. You take 1/2 a tablet before bed each night and it lasts all night and through the next day. If that doesn't work ask your doctor for Zofran, it is a wonder drug.
Kileen says
Thanks Kate! I have a doc's appt when I'm close to 10 weeks so I'll see if it's an option for me. At least I'm close to the end of the first trimester. Hope it gets better then!
Samantha says
Awe Kileen. Don't worry. I think everyone understands! I don't really have any additional recommendations for the nausea though – mine would have been ginger candy. If I hear of anything, I'll be sure to let you know. xo~sam

Good to know. Thank you!!

Oh wow congrats!! I didn't know you were preggers but morning sickness sounds like a pain. I've used something similar to Sea Band for motion sickness and it worked pretty well for me. Good luck and look forward to future posts! =)
Justine says
Congrats Kileen! I hope you get over this phase as quickly as possible! I can't wait to see what you'll wear while pregnant!
Sayaka says
I know exactly how you feel Kileen…you poor thing. For me ginger ale always helped during my morning sickness. I hope your morning sickness goes away quickly so you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Hang in there!!
Petiteish says
I have no experience with morning sickness, but I get nausea on every type of moving vehicle and mint tea really works for me!
Frannie Pantz says
Aw poor Kileen! I do hope you start to feel better. My sons were so easy peasy and I never had so much as a hiccup. My daughter, on the other hand, made me sick even brushing my teeth! Get some rest and put your feet up hun!
Nmmartine says
I was so happy to read about your pregnancy–congrats to you and your family! As for the morning sickness, I never tried the pops, but I did try ginger tea and ginger ale and the saltines (those worked only at the beginning for me as well). I didn't find anything helped much during the 1 month to start of the 4th month that I was sick with my daughter and the 1 month to the start of the 5th month that I was sick with my son. I just was happy that I wasn't throwing up like some women! (See, there is a bright side!) I would say that rest is the best. I suffered from terrible insomnia throughout both pregnancies, and looking back, I figure that I probably would have been less nauseous if I had just let myself sleep during the day a bit (luckily, I had a flexible schedule at work–went in late and worked late). Even when one is not pregnant one's tummy gets queasy on not enough sleep!
Canadianpetite says
Awww you poor thing! When the sleep thing hit me hard, I actually found myself dozing for a minute or two while sitting at my work desk. My husband, the expert 15-minute napper, was happy to hop into bed with me after work for my snooze. I also increased slightly my sodium intake which helped a bit (I usually never use salt in anything). Unfortunately, I don't have recommendations for your nausea although I had to avoid the smell of cooking raw meat which made me gag (it still does). Fortunately, I prefer veggies and fruits. Hang in there! It should get better.
Cheekychums says
awwww i cannot wait till i get pregnant well i hopefully will be reading about women who are pregnant always makes me wonder when i will get to have the experiance of being pregnant myself

Congrats Kileen!
I am such a fan of all your cute ensembles *^_^* Of course there is a lot out there to battle morning sickness. What was best for me was to listen to your body as best you can. When you're tired, which will be quite often right now, then sleep. You're body is creating another human being, which is tiresome! little snacks of whatever you can hold down. Mine was bland carrots, half a red apple, warm water with lemon, cold just made me *blah. I'm not sure if anyone let you know, not to worry if you feel you're not getting enough to eat. the extra calories you need are later down the road in the 3rd trimester. And since we're all small, lol, I found splitting the prenatal pill morning and night was best. I couldn't hold it down taking it all at once.
Good luck, I wish you and your little one all the best! This will pass, and you'll feel, oh so beautiful. *^_^*b
Natasha Fatah says
Awww Kileen. Hope you feel better. It will pass soon enough I'm sure. You are trooper lady, morning sickness and posting every day?! But you look particularly cute in this pic. 🙂

I hope you feel better soon. When is morning sickness supposed to end? I have no idea, but from friends who have experienced the delight I did hear the cracker suggestion. My coworkers keep crackers around while teaching when they're pregnant for that reason. Again, I hope you feel better!
Kileen says
thanks. supposedly it gets better once the second trimester kicks in (month 4). i have less than a month to go. 🙂

you can get those preggie pop things at Babies R Us or Motherhood Maternity or A Pea in the Pod! All of those stores carry them.
I found ginger snaps were helpful. Also, ice breaker sours were a lifesaver as well.
and chewing minty gum.

oh good to know!! i'll be checking out those stores this weekend! thanks so much!

Awww! Hang in there. My morning sickness was SO BAD and I thought it would NEVER go away, but magically, when I hit the 2nd trimester, all the sudden it was gone! My doctor prescribed me Zofran which helped, but it had some unpleasant side effects (constipation, ugh). He also suggested Vitamin B6 (25mg) 3 times a day combined with doxylamine (1/2 tablet in the morning, 1/2 tablet in the afternoon and 1 tablet at night before bed, because it's a sedative). I never tried that (went straight for the prescription Zofran) but you might ask your doctor about it.
Also, I swear I've seen the Preggie Pops at Babies R Us, so if you have one in your area you might check it out. Whole Foods and those kinds of stores should have "natural remedies" for moms also. Good luck!
Sandy a la Mode says
awwww i am soo sorry you have been hit w/ morning sickness!! 🙁 hope it passes soon!!
Iris says
Sorry you haven't been feeling well 🙁 But this is an exciting time and we are all happy you are sharing it with us. Hope it's just a phase and doesn't last during the entire pregnancy.
Kileen says
i think i would gladly trade this constant nausea for constipation, but I guess we'll see what the doc says when I go in for my appointment next week. I'm so glad you're feeling better now! I'm gonna look into taking some of the vitamins too. and I'm definitely going to Babies R Us this weekend to try out some preggie pops! 🙂
Bravoe Runway says
I am sorry you are not feeling well, I hope the nausea goes away soon. One of my colleagues is expecting as well, it's her 3rd…she's hoping it is girl, and she's been experiencing the same thing as well. Hang in there 🙂
SewPetiteGal says
Aww, does it help that you still look cute when you feel bad? Hang in there, it will pass. Do your coworkers know you're pregnant? That can help. It was hard for me to keep it quiet and try to bring my "A game"
Kileen says
I told my boss when I was 5 weeks pregnant and the rest of my coworkers last week. It definitely does help!
TOBeautyReviews says
My cousin and friend suffered from bad morning sickness – my cousin even LOST weight instead of gaining! There is a safe perscription med (in Canada at least) that will help espeically if you are throwing up :(. They also found that keeping mints on hand (any kind!) helped for the sudden boughts but long term they ate tiny amounts of food all through out the day even if they didn't feel hungry and this seemed to help! I hope you feel better!
Kileen says
i actually lost weight too at first but then the doc said my weight was getting too low for it to be safe to sustain the pregnancy. and so i've been forcing myself to eat small meals throughout the day. it's definitely been helping. thanks!
Shasie says
Yea I was going to say Ginger ALe. Anything with ginger should help. I've been nauseated but for a different reason so that works for me. Ugh one of two things I'm not looking forward too with being pregnant…morning sickness and labor! haha
