TJMaxx "Thrill of the Find" and A Giveaway! ** CLOSED **

I was lucky enough to be invited to a "Thrill of the Find" event last Thursday where I was given a tour of my local TJMaxx store by a company representative as well as an opportunity to do a little shopping.

Did you know that TJMaxx is technically considered an off-price retailer {instead of a discount store}?  Off-price means that they provide designer items that are actually on-trend and in-season!  None of this overstock business.  And if they do sell an item that is from a past season, they actually will mark it as such on their price tags!  I actually did spot a Michael Kors sleeveless sequin shell at TJMaxx that I had just seen a couple days ago at my local Macy's -- and it was almost 60% less!  Amazing right?

This kind of off-price shopping is definitely for those who like hunting for deals.  I was so amazed at the name brand items that I saw in store that I couldn't help but take a few pics!

Gorgeous lace dress by BCBGMaxAzria for only $40?!
tjmaxx thrill of the find
Elizabeth and James crepe skirt on clearance!
Notice how they actually indicate that it's a past season style?
The purple tag also indicates that it's designer.

The Runway section -- filled with only high-end designer items.  Holy moly!

Check out all the other labels they carried. The buyers actually work with vendors worldwide!

Oh boy, they carry Jessica Simpson...  this might be the end of me.
How cute are these leopard heels right?

I even found myself a pair of Coach flats for $99!
tjmaxx thrill of the find
Juicy Couture jewelry?!  YES.

Even Michael Kors watches!  I definitely overpaid for mine...
I was so absolutely amazed by the selection of items there -- so many labels I had no idea TJMaxx even carried!

I was given 8 very important tips on how to best shop the store, so I wanted to pass that on to you! {Note that these tips apply to TJMaxx and Marshalls, which are owned by the same parent company.}

1. Look carefully at the “compare at” value on the price tags. What constitutes a bargain?  It’s the mix of the right fashion, a respected brand name, high quality, and a great price. In T.J.Maxx and Marshalls stores, you’ll find the exact same merchandise sold in department and specialty stores, where prices are much higher. By looking at the “compare at” prices you’ll be able to calculate exactly how much money you’re saving.

2. Shop often. Marshalls and T.J.Maxx receive more than 10,000 new items each week (in every store) so you never know when you’ll find the perfect piece. Shopping off-price retailers is like finding a new store full of great deals every time you visit!

3. Get to know your store’s layout. Everyone has their favorite section, whether it is the jewelry counter at T.J.Maxx that features high-end options including 14-kt. gold, sterling silver and semiprecious stones; or Marshalls Shoe MegaShop, which houses thousands of shoes for women, men and children in an easy-to-shop format.

4. Befriend your store manager. Get to know your store manager and they’ll be able to give you the inside scoop on when new shipments arrive so you can grab your favorite brands as soon as they hit the floor.

5. Not sure where to start? Try shopping the displays at the front of the store before easing into the racks. Merchandise in this area is organized by style and designer on four-sided clothing racks. This can be a good place to start as you work your way into the racks to search for even more styles organized by size.

6. Look for the purple tags. Found on all types of clothing and accessories, these tags indicate a piece of elite designer merchandise normally found at upscale department stores. So, when scouring the racks, keep your eyes peeled for the stand-out lavender color to help find your favorite premium brand names.

7. Scan the single queue. Don’t forget to look for last-minute gifts in the checkout line. The “single queue” checkout line is often full of interesting and unique items that can make great gifts, even for yourself!

8. Never, ever, pass up a really good bargain. Our stores receive limited quantities of each item, so merchandise can sell out very quickly. That perfect dress or handbag may not be there the next time. If you change your mind, the stores have very liberal return policies.

Here's what I made out with from my TJMaxx pitstop:
tjmaxx thrill of the find
Vieta Lucille Buckle Satchel - $30 (styled here)
Elizabeth and James Crepe Mini Skirt - $80 (styled here)

The crepe skirt is so cute! I should shop at TJ Maxx more often - I never knew they carried high end designer brands before. The prices are a really good deal considering how much they are originally. And thank you so much for the giveaway! I love the Mulberry Alexa satchel's style - this is a great inspired handbag. I just entered :D

totally agree!!  and for $30 you can't go wrong.  i know the bag is in a couple different Dallas TJMaxx store locations, so even if you don't win, you should be able to find it at your local store.  :)

All of the tj maxx stores around me hardly have any designer items. I'm very jealous ofthose people with the bigger and nicer stores!! That e&j stuff is so pretty, like I mentioned before :)

cute satchel! your tj maxx looks wayyy better than mine. it's really mean that ross, tj maxx, marshalls never have cute shoes in size 5 gahhh

I love Marshall's. It's right down the street from my home, so I often walk through the store to peruse new items when I'm walking around my neighborhood. Love the handbag and shoe selection!

i actually found 2 pairs of shoes in size 5, haha.  out of all the shoes there, only 2 pairs.  i agree that they do need to stock more small sizes!!  it's a complaint i have against DSW too.  :)

Awesome finds! I love TJ Maxx and Marshalls but it always takes forever to go through the stores.. so much stuff to look at! I haven't been to my local TJ Maxx in a long time, I don't think they carry that many designer brands. I think a few, but not as many as yours (unless they recently changed). It also doesn't help that it's two doors down from my favorite Nordstrom Rack, so I never have time leftover when I'm done with the Rack. :)

I will have to disagree on the "look carefully at the 'Compare to' price" tip, because I'm pretty sure they mark up those "original" prices to make it look like a better deal. I used to find things and think I was getting a super great deal, but end up finding out that it was only a little bit cheaper than the original price, and I wasn't saving as much money as I had thought. The other tips are good though!

Your TJ Maxx is WAY nicer than anyone I've ever set foot in!

Oh, I've been seeing a lot of great things from bloggers about TJMaxx.  And I have to get my butt in there!  I need to hang out more with my mom, she's a TJMaxx and Mashalls fanatic.

I am so excited to go to Marshalls in Florida now! It took me two days to read this entry fully because I had my little girl running around my feet and I was pouring over it taking mental notes of everything you were writing. Thank you so much for all of this wonderful information, Kileen, you put so much work into your blog entries, it really shows and pays off! By the way... absolutely love this bag... really, really love this bag!

I love the runway section! There's only one TJMAXX near me that has it...

I'd like to win this satchel please!! LOL

Kileen said... [Reply]

thank you so much, Courtney!! your sweet words really mean a lot to me. i do spend quite a bit of time on my posts because i want them to be helpful to my readers. best of luck at Marshalls/TJMaxx!

Kileen said... [Reply]

i never realized that the TJMaxx nearest to me had a Runway section. they seriously have some awesome labels there that i had no idea about!

Bravoe Runway said... [Reply]

Oh I miss the Runway! We had it for only 1 season at the Downtown Chicago TJMaxx and unfortunately it didn't do very well!  They had Missoni Orange Label dresses for $499! Awesome stuff but nobody was buying it!  I think these were great tips, I have a lot of friends that won't step foot into tjmaxx because they don't have the patience to hunt through the racks or they just feel overwhelmed.

Kileen said... [Reply]

i agree that hunting does require a bit of patience, but i found the racks at the front of each aisle to be great places to look if you just have a few minutes...

I usually go to Nordstrom Rack and have popped into Marshalls once, but I haven't actually checked out the TJ Maxx stores in my area...maybe I should next month, haha.

Is there a form to enter your giveaway?  If there is, I can't see it in the current browser (google docs is disabled here).  I'm already following on Google Friend Connect, facebook, and twitter.

Kileen said... [Reply]

There is a form...I'll go ahead and add your entry. Thanks Pam!

I do have a TKMaxx here as well an am loving it. But some of your tips I didn't know yet, will definitely keep my eyes open for those purple tags and I want a Michael Kors, so maybe they got it cheaper there :) Thx a lot for this post!

Thank you!

Can I add that the "Compare at" is usually only doubled on the TJ Maxx ticket. If the item still has the original tag on it you may be able to see that your savings are actually much more!! Or do a quick google search and see what the item originally sold for! Sometimes your savings are 3 or 4 times the listed one!

Kileen said... [Reply]

oh great tips!! i'm learning so much from you guys. :)
