Summer 2011 Song Anthems

IMG_4149ps.jpg

For me, there are songs that always remind me of certain summers (I'll always associate Katy Perry's "California Gurls" with Summer 2010). And now that the summer of 2011 is coming to an end, I wanted to put up some of the quintessential songs that I will always remember Summer 2011 by {these aren't necessarily the biggest hits of the summer, just my fave songs of this summer :) }.

{Update: I added a playlist at the bottom of the post to help you get your dance on better.  And below each track I have 2 options for you to play the song -- whichever one works for you.  :) }
  1. Katy Perry - "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
Does Katy Perry know the secret formula for a summer hit or what?  I didn't think it got any better than "California Gurls", but this one proved me wrong.

  2. LMFAO - "Party Rock Anthem"
This song will get you dancing all night long.  Guaranteed.

  3. Foster The People - "Pumped Up Kicks"
The buzz around this new band is ridiculous.  That being said, this is my number one song to jam to when out driving.  Or just hanging around the house.  Heck, it's pretty much the best feel-good song ever.  Just don't go analyzing the lyrics...it only sounds like a happy song.

  4. Young Blood - "Naked and Famous"
Definitely listen to the lyrics on this one:
    The bittersweet between my teeth
    Trying to find the in-betweens
    Fall back in love eventually
    Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Makes you appreciate how magical yet fleeting our youth is...

  5. Empire of the Sun - "Walking on a Dream"
The airy falsettos and unique sound remind me a bit of Passion Pit.

  6. Two Door Cinema Club - "What You Know"
Love the electric guitar in the background.  I could listen to this all day.  And maybe I have.

  7. Martin Solveig (featuring Dragonette) - "Hello"
"I just called to say 'Hello' ".  Fun, punchy beat and totally cute lyrics.  This is my new favorite running song too.

  8. Lupe Fiasco - "The Show Goes On"
This song is pre-dates the summer, but I didn't really get into it until a couple months ago.  Love this snippet:
Go on and put your hands up
When times are hard you stand up

  9. Young The Giant - "My Body"
A song that will get your body swaying for sure!

  10. One Republic - "Good Life"
At almost every wedding I went to, this song was played.  It's the quintessential feel-good song to end the summer on.

Meanwhile, even though a part of me wishes I could hold on to the carefree days of summer forever, I am really looking forward to cooler weather and the changes that fall brings.  But at least I can always listen to these songs again to relive my summer memories!  :)

Me looking ridiculous as I blare my car stereo and have my own little dance party.
Dance like no one's looking, right?  :)

  1. Is it bad I only recognize Katy Perry in all those artists? And don't even know those songs? I kind of live under a rock though. And in the past. My summer songs have been Cheap Sunglasses by ZZ Top, Could Have Been a Lady by April Wine and Never Look Behind by Sun Project (random electronic amidst the old) aaand In the Evening by Led Zeppelin.

  7. Great picks, Kileen! I specially like Walking on a Dream and Naked and Famous! And you CAN'T beat Party Rock  in the dancing jams department!! Hmm, what to add, MGMT has some good ones too and being hispanic myself, I can't not dance to any Pitbull song, they're so rhythmic!

  13. Cutest post EVER! Please show us more of this side of you! I'm not very good with songs and their titles, but listen to the radio quite often. I'm easy and anything in the top 40 works for me :) Did Katy Perry's Teenage Dreams come out this summer? Though I do prefer the Glee version more. Blaine FTW! Or any Britney songs. Love that girl.

  14. haha, so glad you like the silly animation! i'll definitely try to include more fun stuff like this in the future.

and Teenage Dream is definitely one of my fave songs (I love almost everything Katy Perry) -- i played it at my wedding reception and it was a huge hit too! And I almost always like the Glee version of songs more. Blaine is so cute!! :)

  18. Kileen, as a music teacher, can I tell you how much I love this? I only recognize have of the songs you selected so I'm excited to go home and check out the rest I haven't heard! Great idea post! Sadly, my playlist would probably consist of my daughter's car playlist of Kindermusik songs and the wiggles butt I love that LMFAO and Katy Perry tune. I laugh every time I hear Peacock from that album. So naughty. The bridge of it cracks me up!! Cute post!!!

  23. I love rocking out to music in the car and in my living room (with the Hubs and kiddo). We let our son pic the music off the ipod and he is actually a jazz guy. One of his fave is Herbie Hancock's, "Head Hunters" (his funky jazz period). True story. Many of what you posted here are my current faves for shaking that booty! Especially love your moving picture, reminding me that I've not done one in a while on my blog. The black and white outfit against a blank wall looks so stylish! It's wonderful to see a "lighter" side of you!

  26. #2 & 3 are definitely my summer favorites!  I went to a Weezer concert and they sang the "Pumped Up Kicks" song! Very fun!  I heard it on the radio once with "gun" and "bullets" bleeped out!

Your dancing image is the cutest!!

  27. I definitely love Empire of the Sun - "Walking on a Dream".
What I've been listening to recently is Maroon 5's "Misery" and "Moves Like Jagger" and for some reason a LOT of 80s music. It's just so happy and boppy!

I am SO excited to see Naked and Famous on your list! To be honest, I didn't know that they were known outside of New Zealand.

It's always interesting to see what kind of music people are interested in - Thanks Kileen
