I love a good challenge -- especially when it's a fashion one!  This outfit is a response to this month's Petite Fashion Challenge hosted by Jess of StylePint.  Here are the details of the challenge:

Challenge:  “Dress Up Your Basics”
Jeans and a tee is a classic outfit starter. Depending on what you layer over this basic pairing, you can change style and feel of the entire look. This is your chance to show your personality and your creativity.
For this challenge, start off with a jeans and tee basic look (it can be any style or color) and dress it up to show off your personal style with accessories, jewelry, and whatever you’d like to add.

Express (Minus the) Leather Quilted Shoulder Jacket - XXS / $47 (buy - $30 off with code 1212 + 3% back with Mr. Rebates)
J. Crew Embellished Mustard Tank (via Buffalo Exchange) - XS / $18 (similar)
Gap Belt - XS (buy)
Aldo Whitsey Pumps in Cognac - 36 (buy) (similar)
Louis Vuitton Ellipse Purse - gifted from parents (similar)

I love a casual t-shirt and jeans look for its inherent comfort, but sometimes I feel that it's a little lacking in polish and creativity for me.  Since I still wanted to keep the look simple today, I just added a basic faux leather jacket and some matching heels.  In my mind, there's nothing that a leather jacket can't make instantly cool.  And high heels always pull a look together like nothing else (who doesn't want longer legs?).  These Aldo Whitsey pumps are actually one of the most comfortable shoes I own (I could walk for miles, seriously), so there was no questioning the fact that they had to be included in this little ensemble.

I kinda lucked out when picking this t-shirt for the challenge as it already had some built-in embellishments at the neckline.  If that weren't the case though, a large statement necklace also does the trick nicely (I actually have my eyes on this one and may or may not have placed an order online for it already...  :)  Accessories are key, after all, to making a basic outfit a stylish one!

Oh, and be sure to check out all the other petite fashion entries for the challenge over at Jess's blog!

  24. I'm so glad you posted this! I was actually looking at that (non)leather jacket for the longest but the stores never had XXS in stock so I wasn't sure how it would fit. Can I ask what color yours is? The cognac color on the website looks so much yellower and lighter in color than yours does in your photos.

  25. Love this brown and yellow combo, it's so unexpected and it looks great on you! The detail on your leather jacket makes it extra special! =)

  29. Great embelishment on the T! It really adds to the look but as you said a great statement necklace would do the job too. I also love that you chose a colourful top (but of course you did, color brigade queen! ;) )

  34. I absolutely love this faux leather jacket. i tried on the XS in the store
and it was ridiculously big on me. the XXS is available online only and it
fits like a dream! the color is like a lighter brown color. i think the
color shown on the website seems pretty accurate. my pictures were taken at
7:30am so there's not a lot of sunlight, which is why i think my jacket
color looks a little darker. hope this helps! :)

  35. This doesn't look like a "basic" outfit at all! I like how you managed to match the jacket with the shoes :)

  36. I'm always a little cared of big statement necklaces because I'm so petite myself and I feel like they overwhelm me sometimes. I'm gonna have to watch how you wear yours to get inspired!

    You look great :)

  38. Ahh that makes a lot of sense because in some of your pictures the jacket looks
almost burgundy in color; thanks for replying back Kileen!

  39. Hi Kileen,

I love how you're always rocking sky-high heels! Do you actually wear them all day at work or just for pictures? Major kudos to you if you can walk in them all day hehehe...

    ReplyDelete
  40. I do wear them all day but I have a desk job -- I just sit and program all
day. The most I walk is usually just to and from the bathroom, lol. I do,
however, wear my heels all day on the weekends if I'm out. It's usually the
best way for me to test out the comfortability of a shoe. :)

  45. Get out of town, that looks like real leather to me! Nice quilted touch on your jacket. Express surprises me now and then with their clothing ... sometimes they are ultra petite friendly. =0D

  46. You always have great heels! Faux leather jacket+slick ponytail=Chic chick! I hope to get back on track with the Color Brigade soon.

  47. Actually I think Annie has the moto jacket from Express, which I also have. This one is slightly different in the bottom hem, the quilted shoulder detailing, and the lack of zipper at the sleeves. :)

  56. I have this jacket and I LOVE it, but don't know what kind of shoes to wear it with.  What other shoes would you pair with this jacket?

    ReplyDelete
  57. another obvious choice is to pair the jacket with nude pumps.  for other options, it depends on the rest of the outfit.  i would say that even for this outfit that i'm wearing, i could've paired it with black pumps too since it would go with the black jeans I'm wearing.  hope that helps!
