I love finding pieces that I can wear to everywhere, whether it’s to work or just out running errands. A shirt dress is a closet essential and this chambray shirt dress from English Factory may just be my most favorite! I love that the cut is slimming yet not body conscious and the built-in layered look changes it up from your normal sweater dress or shirt dress. The fabric is lightweight yet warm (perfect for those chilly office buildings!) and I just love the feminine bow detail. Shirt dresses are one of the most versatile pieces you can add to your closet and I’m sharing 10 styling ideas to help you get the most mileage out of that closet piece!
- GO GLAM WITH A PAIR OF HEELS. Nothing gives a look a little bit of glamour than a pair of chic heels and these from Steve Madden are a must (seriously, I have them in 3 colors!).
- KEEP IT CASUAL WITH SNEAKERS. Sneakers have made a major comeback and the slip-on style is such a cute pairing with dresses. I’ve personally been eyeing this white pair from Vince!
- LAYER WITH A DENIM JACKET. If you don’t have a denim jacket in your closet, you need one! They are seriously one of the most versatile pieces in my closet and can be layered over basically anything! I love this classic one from Madewell and Gap has one that they’ve brought back year after year too!
- TRANSITION INTO FALL WITH ANKLE BOOTIES. Pairing dresses with ankle booties is another style that I’ve started loving in the past couple of years and it’s a great way to be comfortable in a dress and transition it into cooler weather! If you’re petite like me, I recommend finding a pair that’s cut lower in the front to create the illusion of longer legs (like this one or this one)!
- TOUGHEN IT UP WITH A LEATHER JACKET. Leather moto jackets are my next favorite after denim jackets when it comes to layering and it gives any outfit a bit of edge!
- BELT IT (and layer over tights / jeans if necessary!). You can easily change up the look of shift dresses with the addition of a belt and it’s a great way to add a little shape too, especially if you’re petite! I personally prefer skinny belts when it comes to accessorizing with dresses as I find it creates a sleeker, more feminine silhouette.
- ADD FUN ACCESSORIES. I’m all about the statement earrings but I also love adding in a classic bag. In the summer, I love a hat to protect from the sun while scarves are my go-to piece as the weather cools down.
- LAYER A SWEATER OVER IT. To really change up your look, add a sweater on top of your dress and make it a skirt! Banana Republic always has quality sweaters that layer well and last for years (plus they always have so many colors to choose from!).
- GO PROFESSIONAL WITH A BLAZER. Nothing says business than a chic blazer and they’re great layered over shirt dresses too! I currently have my eye on this one — I love the blue-grey color and it comes in petites!
- MAKE A STATEMENT WITH TALL BOOTS. Boots with dresses is another favorite when fall rolls around and with shorter shirt / sweater dresses like this one, I actually use it as an opportunity to wear my over-the-knee boots (these iconic ones from Stuart Weitzman are currently 40% off!).
